Cosy countryside hideaway tucked away in rural Oxfordshire

Hidden just outside Witney, Artist Residence Oxfordshire feels like the kind of place you stumble across and immediately want to keep to yourself. Surrounded by countryside and tucked away from the pace of everyday life, the hotel balances rustic charm with beautifully timeless interiors — the sort of place designed for slower mornings, long baths and completely switching off for a while. It’s intimate, cosy and effortless.

THE ROOMS

I stayed in one of the rustic barn rooms, which felt more like a beautifully designed countryside hideaway than a traditional hotel room. Exposed wood, warm textures and softer lighting gave the space an incredibly cosy atmosphere, while the freestanding bathtub quickly became one of my favourite details in the room. Everything feels thoughtfully put together without trying too hard — timeless interiors that feel both elevated and comfortable at the same time. It’s the perfect location to put your phone down, stay in your robe all evening and disappear from the world for a night.

FOOD & DRINK

Food at Artist Residence Oxfordshire centres around the hotel’s cosy countryside pub, Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms. With its open fireplace, worn woods, candlelit corners and relaxed rustic interiors, it feels exactly how you’d hope a countryside pub would — warm, intimate and somewhere you naturally end up lingering a little longer than planned. The seasonal menu focuses on comforting, elevated pub classics made with fresh ingredients, making it the perfect spot to settle into after a long countryside walk or slower day exploring Oxfordshire.

Breakfast in bed here also felt particularly special. Slow mornings, fresh coffee, warm pastries and soft countryside light pouring through the windows somehow made time feel like it completely stopped for a while. Everything about the experience encourages you to properly switch off and disappear from the outside world.

THINGS TO DO

Artist Residence Oxfordshire is less about packed itineraries and more about slowing down properly. The surrounding countryside makes it perfect for long walks, slower mornings and switching off from the noise. Nearby villages, countryside pubs and smaller local spots are all within easy reach, though honestly, the hotel itself feels like enough of a destination to spend most of your stay tucked away inside.
